While Operation Moses, the famous Israeli lead secret airlifts of the vulnerable Jewish population from Western Ethiopia in 1984, brought Ethiopian Jews to the world, thousands still live in Addis Ababa. A marginalized people forced to live as artisans, the are an insular community but rich in tradition and passion for their heritage. The first 14 images in this series are from a 500 yr. old “secret synagogue” hours east of the capital that is only accessed by a 3 hour hike. Soon after visiting the community I held a fundraiser for the stranded elders who had a number of maladies and were unable to leave do it the difficult terrain. Nine people were eventually carried out of the valley and received medical aid. The rest of the images are from the community in Kechene, Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
